Project

ISOLATION AND ANALYSIS OF WATERBORNE BACTERIA FROM BIDYANUS BIDYANUS (SILVER PERCH)

The aquaculture industry has lost a substantial amount of money due to the increasing fish mortality caused by bacterial infection[1]. Gram-negative bacteria are known to be causative agents of bacterial infection in Bidyanus bidyanus[2]. Currently, there are no protocols that allow pre-emptive isolation and characterization of these bacteria from Bidyanus bidyanus. The main aim of this project is to create the protocol. With the results produced, the farmers can take appropriate precautionary measures against waterborne pathogens before the outbreak happens. The general workflow of the project includes sample collection, culturing bacteria using selective and differential media, as well as conducting biochemical tests (catalase and oxidase tests). The API-20E system was also used to identify the fish pathogenic bacteria.
